The Welsh springer is one of the oldest spaniel breeds known to man. Their history dates back as far as 7000 BC. The Welsh springer, like a lot of breeds, came from Wales. They were hunted on many
types of game - from rabbits to pheasants - which they flushed for falcons.
The Welsh springer is a medium sized dog. The male averages between 40-48 lbs and stands 18-19 inches at the shoulder. The female is a little smaller at 35-40 lbs and stands 17-18 inches. The Welsh springer is quick to bark at any odd noise or strangers.
Their hunting style is slower than the English springer spaniel. They hunt more or less at a fast walk or slow run - which makes them ideal for hunting grouse or woodcock. They are very thorough when hunting and will check out any scent completely.
If you wish to hunt a welsh springer, it needs to be started on training at an early age. For more info on the Welsh springer spaniel, visit the Club website.
